Documenting Wildlife for Future Generations

The Pig Caller

The pig pictures below are poor quality. I only include them to collaborate my story.

October 12, 2006: I went to photograph wildlife in the Santa Ynez River bed on base. At approximately 6:30 p.m. 2 pigs, some deer and a coyote came out the brush. They were all to my left about a 100 yards; too far for my camera. So I got out of my portable blind and crawled on my hands and knees to get closer. By that the time I got within 50 yards, the light level was too low for good pictures but I tied anyway.

Well I thought I'd try to get the pigs to come closer by calling them. So here I am, grunting like a pig. To my amazement, one of the pigs looked in my direction and went around a bush. I kept grunting and few seconds later he came out and was walking directly toward me, so with camera in position, I'm clicking off shots. He kept coming. Like a pro photographer, I stayed on him. Finally, his head filled my view finder and I had to back off the zoom and kept shooting. It finally dawned on me that he may be close. I moved the camera to the side to find the pig was now only 20 feet from me and still coming at me. I decided he was close enough and stood up to scare it off.

As anticipated, the pictures didn't come out well, but I had a lot of fun. Next time I'll use a different lens that will work better in low light. The zoom isn't that much, but if I can get within 40 feet, I should get some great shots.

So now you can call me the pig caller.
